Tribal Project Grants

Digitizing Historic Records Grants

The Digitizing Historical Records Program awards grants to assist in the use of cost-effective methods to digitize collections of nationally significant historical records and to make digital versions freely available online.  Projects must make use of existing holdings that are already available to the public, and must consist of entire collections or series of materials.  Grant Amount/Period:  up to $150,000/1-3 years.  Matching required.  Contact:  Nancy Melley, 202-357-5452, nancy.melley@nara.gov  

Electronic Records Project Grants
Deadline:  June 7, 2012 
Electronic Records Grants support projects that help archivists preserve records of enduring historic value.  Projects in the following categories may be funded: start-up projects that assist institutions as they prepare to capture and preserve electronic records; collaborative projects that allow institutions to establish or improve electronic archives through effective and innovative collaborations; and professional development projects that develop and offer professional education curricula.  Projects in this program cannot include digitization efforts.  Grant Amount/Period:  varies depending on the type of project/1-3 years up to $200,000.  Matching required.  Contact: Nancy Melley, 202-357-5452, nancy.melley@nara.gov

National Historical Publications and Records Commissions Grants                    
Documenting Democracy:  Access to Historical Records Project Grants

Basic Processing Projects | Deadline: TBA 2012 (tentative date October, 2012) Detailed Processing Projects | Deadline: TBA 2012 (tentative date October, 2012) 
The National Historical Publications and Records Commission awards grants to support archival activities that promote the preservation and use of the nation’s most valuable archival resources.  Basic Processing Projects Grants may fund activities associated with the establishment of new archives, including basic processing of previously unprocessed collections; collections development; and limited preservation activities, including the evaluation of environmental conditions and preservation planning.  Detailed Processing Projects Grants may fund the detailed processing and preservation of collections with great national significance.  Collections should have high research demand or face substantial preservation challenges.  In the course of detailed processing, some selective refoldering and basic cleaning may be needed.  Applicants must explain whether any item-level conservation treatments such as removing fasteners and envelopes, surface cleaning, flattening, mending, copying, deacidifying, encapsulating, and refoldering will be necessary.  Collections that hold fragile textual materials or unstable audio or video materials may apply for grants to fund preservation reformatting.  Basic and Detailed Processing Grants Amount/Period:  up to $200,000/1-2 years.  Matching required.  Contact:  Alexander Lorch, 202-357-5101, alexander.lorch@nara.gov
